Physical Chemistry

Module Leader:

2016-2017 Spring
Natural Sciences

This module is concerned with the physical aspects of chemistry. In addition to the properties of gases and pure substances, we will discuss the First and the Second Law of Thermodynamics and how one can use them in chemistry. We will study the principles of chemical equilibrium and electrochemistry, after which we will go into the field of chemical kinetics, i.e. the rates of chemical reactions. Depending on the learning pace of the group, the module may also provide an introduction to quantum chemistry. Physical Chemistry is taught in the first trimester of chemistry at Oxbridge, and participating in this module will thus help students understand the material beforehand.
