The multidisciplinary endeavour of Drug Discovery and Development will be presented for a specific example. Starting from the discovery of the specific disease, the clinical studies required for the approval of new pharmaceutical compounds will be explored. The process of finding suitable drug targets, respective drug candidates and the main experimental techniques will be discussed. The module will conclude with a discussion of the challenges concerning the industrial scale production of drug compounds. The course highlights the role of medical professionals, biologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, chemists and other scientists in finding safe, efficacious, and affordable drugs. The main objective is to provide insight into the relevant scientific fields and develop an appreciation of scientific scrutiny, experimental design, and scientific communication. The course is intended to be helpful for anyone interested in medicine or the natural sciences.
