This module is designed to provide students with an insight to experimental work in molecular biology. The aim of the project is to make (express) a recombinant protein in bacteria and purify it, which is a basic procedure used in molecular biology. Performing the steps in this process will give the students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the most important experimental techniques such as pipetting, bacterial cell culture, transformation, agarose and SDS gel electrophoresis and liquid protein chromatography.
Students will also learn about the theoretical background of the applied methods and the practical uses of them in research and in the biotech industry. We will also learn about safety rules in the laboratory and how to properly write lab reports – what information it is necessary to document for an experiment to be reproducible and why that is important.
