In this module, we will be studying thinking about the thinking in (natural) sciences. The realm of Science consists of scientific disciplines which are believed to be the most solid and most well-founded bodies of knowledge. We will look at some of the types of scientific disciplines and will survey some of the arguments challenging their purported solidness and well-foundedness. Since bodies of scientific knowledge (called sometimes \u201dtheories\u201d also in the case of merely descriptive sciences like the underlying theory of geography, plate tectonics) are exposed to get superseded, it is no surprise that also theories about scientific theories are prone to loose their validity or to the shrinking of the area where they are not challenged to be able to hold water.
\nSome of the questions we will look into are listed under point 2.
\nWe will investigate those and similar questions via studying the answers that certain philosophers gave to them, as well as the arguments of some other philosophers who challenged these answers.
\nQuestions of this sort have strong bearings on some central issues in epistemology, philosophy of language, analytic philosophy, and the methodology of science. Exploring these links will give a better understanding of some of the most active terrains in these four fields.
\nThe completion of the module will give the student a strong basis and sufficient background to engage in independent research.
\nAlso it will give practice enough for sitting for the Oxford Philosophy Test (for prospective undergraduates in Philosophy and Theology) containing comprehension-style, logic-style and essay questions, designed to measure a candidate\u2019s philosophical reasoning skills; or for the Thinking Skills Assessment test required from future undergraduates in Human Sciences, or in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, or in Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
