Students will also explore aspects of Eastern and Western performance traditions, embedded in their cultural and social context. Through the discussion of, and creative engagement with, the core texts students will be able to identify the most important milestones in the development of the genres of the stage play and the short story and of their presentation to the audience (on the stage and on the page) in different parts of the world. They will also be able to discuss the cultural and social background that influenced and responded to these works throughout the centuries. The texts were chosen to highlight the different cross-cultural connections that evolve through their themes, style, or structure. Using close reading as an interpretational strategy, students will be able to explore aspects of narratology, dramaturgy, performance, post-colonialism, sociology, politics, and religion. The course will help students in interpreting and creatively engaging with core texts of world literature, while also providing them with a toolkit for reading and engaging with critical literature.
