This learning lab is to prepare students for participation in two British Biology Olympiads:
1) The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) competition, which consists of two 45 minute online examinations taken under supervised exam conditions at the Milestone Institute on Saturday, 3 February 2024, from 13:30 to 16:30.
All Milestone students attending this module will automatically be registered for the BBO.
2) The Intermediate Biology Olympiad (iBO – note the small „i”) competition, which consists of one 60 minute online examination taken under supervised Exam conditions at the Milestone Institute on Saturday 8 June 2024 from 10:30 to 12:30. Participation in this olympiad is optional for completing the module.
This competition is open to all Milestone students attending this module who are under 17 years of age on 1 September 2023 (current Juniors) and all students who fulfil this criterion will automatically be entered for this competition.
Throughout the term, the module will also prepare students for selection to the Hungarian team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO – note the capital „I”).
The IBO 2024 will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, in person from July 7 to 14 2024. The Hungarian IBO committee based in Szeged will select a team of 4 students to send there. Students who fulfil the eligibility criteria will be asked to sign up at the end of March and subjected to 3 intense rounds of online selection and a final in-person practical exam.
Only students who are Hungarian citizens and attend Hungarian schools teaching according to the Hungarian National Curriculum, and who have made it through the second round of the Hungarian OKTV are eligible for selection to the Hungarian National team.
Learning Lab candidates who are not eligible for the International Biology Olympiad are still encouraged to take this module as it will prepare them for the next year’s BBO, particularly if they are candidates for the Intermediate Biology Olympiad.
The preparation will consist of quizzes with random questions from previous years taken „against the clock” within a progressively shorter allotted time and an analysis of those questions on which students performed worst to fill obvious gaps in knowledge or understanding.
