Chemistry Tournament Learning Lab

The International Chemistry Tournament (http://ichto.org/en/about/) started in 2017 in Moscow at the Lomonosov University. It was a new type of chemistry competition, where the emphasis is not on the reproduction of absorbed knowledge, but on imagination, disciplined fantasy, presentation, argumentation and teamwork. The national teams have to develop creative answers to about a dozen of weird chemical problems which have no known solution, only more or less probable solutions (if at all). The teams present their solutions and have to defend them against competitor groups and have to evaluate each other’s solutions. The national team is selected locally in each participant country. The national round in Hungary is an individual competition: 5 questions are published (sometime in late Autumn) which everyone has to develop individually, the roles are the same as in the international tournament. The members selected for the international round form a team and prepare both individually and as a team for the international tournament, as soon as the actual year’s Tournament questions are published and it is possible to apply. The goal of this module is to familiarise the participants with the structure of the tournament, with the types of questions, literature search, argumentation, and teamwork. Hopefully we can meet one participant of the 2023 Tournament in Tbilisi, who can share her experience with the audience. Students interested in this kind of competition are welcome.
