The aim of this module is to introduce ecology as it is: a highly complex discipline, focusing on the relationships of wild populations of organisms with their biological and physical environment. As the term time is limited, we will only take snapshots of the immense diversity of ecological problems. We will learn the basics for understanding ecology, and we will discuss a handful of very specific problems.
The module is aimed at students with a special interest in biology, especially in supraindividual biology (e.g. ecology, evolution, conservation). Students will be required to make an effort in understanding novel concepts, and also, to participate in group discussions.
In the first half of the term we will cover the basic concepts of ecology and conservation, and we will discuss exponential growth, community dynamics, and biodiversity. In the second half of the term, we will focus on global ecological issues, such as biological invasions, overfishing, and global pandemics. At the end of the term, we will try to be optimistic.
