Cursing and Datasets

he aim of this module is twofold. On the one hand, the sessions will provide insight into the field of linguistics in general, with attention to both theoretical and applied linguistics. The module will guide the student through this field using the concept of “bad language” – or cursing – and focus on the taxonomy, the effects of culture and time, as well as the psychological and neurological aspects of cursing. On the other hand, the students will be introduced to the world of quantitative data collection, will gain experience in executing the first steps of a research project, and thus prepare to take on further modules such as Statistics. All students are welcome who are interested in the field of linguistics, and are open to trying their hand at quantitative data collection. Disclaimer: “bad language”, that is, words and phrases some may consider offensive or triggering will be used in the course material and class discussions.
