In seeking to critically untangle the contested relationships between energy and society, this module takes you to the forefront of contemporary policy dilemmas and scholarly debates on energy governance. Drawing on case studies throughout, our main themes will be (i) energy crisis and security, (ii) energy transitions, and (iii) energy-as-development. We will explore these topics through the lenses of political economy, social and environmental justice, and geopolitics. Through our classroom discussions and assessments, including an end-of-module simulation, you will develop an informed understanding of some of the most pressing energy-related matters in academic research, policy, and practice today.
Besides specialist subject-specific knowledge, the module will also improve your transferable skills, including presentation, written production, the critical synthesis of source materials, as well as debating. No prior knowledge of any of the discussed topics is assumed. The module is particularly recommended for those seeking to study International Relations, Geography, Land Economy, Sociology, Anthropology, Politics, Social and Public Policy, and Area Studies at university. Students interested in Economics, History, and International Law are also welcome.
