The learning lab aims to provide systematic preparation for the autumn part of the three-round national competition, the Hungarian Geographical Contest (Hungeo). This event is the official selection competition for the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo). iGeo is the largest annually held Geography competition. The next event will be held in Dublin (Ireland) in August 2024. As the first four students of the Hungeo competition will join the Hungarian national team who will travel to iGeo 2024, our focus is Hungeo.
The Lab follows the structure of the Hungeo competition, focusing on one particular round (written round) that will be held in winter (the exact date is not available yet). In harmony with the written test, the Lab concentrates on synoptic themes that help to connect different geographical concepts. Furthermore, the Lab helps to develop graphical and analytical skills (describing trends and spatial patterns, reading, analyzing, and interpreting images/graphs) and evaluation (answering open-ended questions, presenting, and discussing current issues) at different spatial levels.
The Lab covers the following six synoptic themes: Land and life, Change, Climate Frontlines, Inequalities, Global to Local, and Urban Challenges. The approach of the Lab centred around learning Geography through case studies with the help of the “everyday geography” concept.
In general, the lab is suitable for students who are already interested in geographical and environmental issues and have ambitions to test their knowledge in a wide range of topics related to spatial processes and problems.
