Part of the Thinking Pathway, Journal Clubs take a dual approach of establishing the identity of students as thinkers through engaging with age-old, foundational questions, while simultaneously connecting their intellectual development to current issues. The thematic curation of the course reflects this duality by offering a combination of topics deeply rooted in various scholarly traditions ranging from the natural and social sciences to the humanities, as well as bearing relevance for the burning social, technological and political questions of our century.
Journal Clubs have their own thematic focus each term, however they follow an overarching narrative to offer a coherent and exciting journey. Themes, topics and problems continuously shape and organically flow into each other throughout the whole academic year of the Access Programme according to the following scheme:
In the Summer Term, the focus of the investigation is set with the label ‘Crisis’, where students are given the opportunity to engage with a fine selection of disquieting phenomena shaping our times.
Autumn Term sessions are organized around the notion of ‘Origins’, which refers to the investigation of the roots and causes of the problems and challenges raised by the 21st century.
In the Spring Term, the organizing theme of the discussions bears the title ‘Horizons’, which opens up, reveals and explores the possible opportunities, solutions and way-outs of the previously presented and investigated themes.
