A regular 8-week module in the summer term for continuing juniors and seniors interested in media and journalism. The module develops knowledge of media theory and press history, moreover journalistic and editorial skills. The module emphasises the distinction between media types and genres, press ethics and current issues such as fact checking and fake news. The module develops not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills. The students will be assigned a project to produce a (Newsweek-like) colour magazine reporting on the previous academic year of Milestone, which is due to be published in September. The participants of the module will form the editorial board of this magazine. The magazine will feature the work of Milestone students in a wide variety of genres (reportage, investigative journalism, interviews, essays, literary works, photos, and graphics), and will serve as a publication forum for Milestone students and as an annual report for the Institute. The magazine will not only feature articles written by students who attend the Module, but the opportunity to publish will also be offered to the whole Milestone community, whereas students attending the Module will serve as editors. This will create a highly participatory experience which will reflect the diversity of the Milestone student body. The magazine’s target audience is therefore the broader Milestone community (students, teachers, parents), but it can also be used for external PR (for example, to introduce new applicants to Milestone’s previous academic year) and, through its diverse articles, can be of interest to external readers.
