Posters for Change

Introduction to Graphic Design

Posters were the mass medium of the 20th century. They were everywhere, not just in commercial settings but in the context of social change from the October Revolution of 1917 to the queer liberation of the 80s. You could ask the question: Why study posters in the digital age? They are large format, colourful, bold and in your face. Still, it is the perfect choice to raise awareness or communicate abstract ideas effectively.

During this module, students get to know and also practise the basics of graphic design as a visual communication tool through the genre of poster design. Each session focuses on specific aspects of graphic design, from composition through typography to the conceptual image. The chain of sessions gradually prepares students to design and execute their own posters. As this module is about composition and communication, no drawing skills are needed.

Sessions focus on short practical tasks in pairs and groups, and lots of sharing and discussions. Because of the practical nature of the module and the brevity of sessions, students are required to do practical assignments between classes.

The module is suitable for students interested in visual culture, art and design, including architecture and web design, image-making practices, lens-based art such as photography and cinema, and the marketing industries.

No prior experience required: No prior knowledge or practice in art, design or drawing is needed to complete the module.
