Power and Culture

Power does not always destroy, prohibit or reduce; power also resides in the capacity to produce, categorize, manage, hide… Power is present everywhere. In school, at home, in TikTok videos, movies and TV shows you watch everyday, in those video games you play, and in this very module , there is power.
Is power something you possess or exercise? Why do schools, factories, and prisons resemble each other? What does shape our gender identity? Can high-art be a medium of power? Do video-games like Call of Duty “invade” our minds? Can we resist a serious issue like oppression through silly internet memes? By addressing these (and more) questions, in this module, we will learn how power operates through popular culture and everyday practices.
In addition to exploring these topics, the module aims to get students familiar with the skill of employing theory to analyze movies, video games, literature, art, and institutions.
The module will touch upon not only numerous topics but also fields. The module is suitable for those who are interested in and want to explore further international relations, cultural studies, sociology, gender studies, and history.
