The geometry of built structures, such as bridges, towers, and buildings with a large span (e.g., concert halls, factories, and sports facilities) essentially determines their resistance against external actions (e.g., wind, snow, etc.). In other words, the amount of materials needed to build the structure hinges on the geometric arrangement and the connections of the load-bearing elements.
This course aims to introduce structural design through a simple problem: from a given amount of spaghetti pasta and fixed span build the bridge with a maximal load bearing. This latest is the maximal vertical load at collapse, measured at the midpoint of the structure.
Beyond theoretical introduction into the basic laws of statics and structural design, the module focuses on the actual realization of the possible designs – the building phase is carried out of groups of 3 or 4 students. The module aims to provide preparation for Spaghetti Bridge competitions announced for high school students. The module is highly recommended for students pursuing a career in Engineering and/or Design. Students interested in related fields such as natural sciences are also welcome.
