What is art and how should we look at it?
This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of art history and museum studies, from ancient civilizations to contemporary art forms. We cover the major periods, movements and styles of art history, including ancient civilizations, the Renaissance, modernism and contemporary art. We also explore key concepts and debates in museum studies, such as representation, cultural heritage and the role of museums in society. Students will learn to examine works of art from different cultures and periods, analyze their formal and conceptual aspects, and examine their significance in wider social, political and cultural contexts.
The module covers essential knowledge for anyone interested in pursuing art or a related field professionally and is therefore strongly recommended to all students in the Applied Aesthetics pathway, especially to those interested in fine art, architecture, sculpture, photography, design, animation, and cinematography. This module is also recommended for students interested in the humanities, especially art history, cultural studies, museum studies and related fields.
