In our everyday lives, we are surrounded by a host of electronic equipment (radio, TV, telecommunication devices, sensors, actuators, robots, and the like), and we use them without considering the technical background behind them. Most of the advanced technology (not only in electronics) was made possible by the rapid development of materials science, born from the merger of chemistry, physics, and engineering sciences. New devices are developed by selecting the required properties and functions, finding the materials that meet these requirements, and finally, the processing technology needed to realise them. All this requires an iterative process based on theoretical and practical knowledge. In this Module, we would like to show this world by introducing a few structural units and materials used in electronics: semiconductor devices, two classes of power sources (batteries and solar panels), and the basic types of displays. The Sessions will be organised in pairs: one “practical” to gather hands-on experience and one “theoretical” to provide the background for better understanding.
