The Key to Our Students’ Success: Building an Irresistible Academic Profile

2025. 07. 30.

Writing an irresistible personal statement is a crucial step in the university application journey. This written self-introduction offers a unique opportunity for applicants to stand out from the crowd and to present their strengths, ambitions and suitability for their chosen course in their own voice.

It is important to note that the expectations surrounding personal statements vary significantly between the world’s leading universities—particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. Even within a single country, different elite institutions may place emphasis on different elements of style, structure, and content.

In general, prestigious universities everywhere value commitment, genuine interest, clear evidence of intellectual engagement, and strong communication skills. However, while UK institutions primarily focus on academic potential and subject-specific motivation, American universities tend to take a more holistic approach, assessing the applicant as a whole person.

Admissions Expectations: Domestic vs. International Systems

In recent months, we have proudly shared many of our students’ success stories. In this post, we aim to offer a clearer picture of the path leading to a successful university application—and the hard work involved in getting there.

The admissions processes of the world’s top universities differ significantly from the approach typically followed in Hungary. While the local system traditionally emphasises mandatory and minimum requirements—preparing students explicitly for final school exams—leading international institutions often place greater value on extracurricular and non-compulsory activities. These are the aspects they are most interested in when it comes to assessing students’ performance and potential.

An academic profile is much more than a strong school report—it is an essential component of the university application and one of several materials students must submit. It should reflect the student’s academic journey, achievements, and goals. It must also highlight extracurricular activities such as community involvement, work placements, and key milestones in the student’s personal development.

Building an Academic Profile: Where to Begin?

So where should one begin? The first step is exploration. Students need to actively seek out opportunities that align with their own interests and expose themselves to as many academic fields as possible in order to discover what truly engages them—or, to use a modern term, what “draws them in”.

This exploration can take many forms:

  • Practical experiences such as extracurricular clubs, volunteering, exchange programmes, student conferences, internships or work placements, involvement in student societies, or creative and physical activities (sport, music, the arts);
  • Or theoretical and academic pursuits, such as academic competitions, Olympiads, project work, or even publishing research.

How Personal Statements Differ Internationally

As students approach the application phase, another key element becomes crucial—a document that symbolises the difference between Hungarian and international admissions procedures: commonly referred to as a motivation letter in Hungary, but more broadly understood as a personal statement in English-speaking contexts, with a subtly different meaning.

Think of it as a blank canvas on which the student is free to paint a picture of themselves—highlighting their most relevant experiences, academic achievements, personal journey, and future goals.

Depending on whether a student is applying to a university in Europe, the United States, or the United Kingdom, there are some notable differences to be aware of.

In the United States, students are asked to write essays that provide insight into their personal motivations, aspirations, and character. The application process is far less focused on academic results and more about understanding who the student is and what drives them.

In the United Kingdom, universities place greater emphasis on academic achievement, competition results, and suitability for the chosen subject. The personal statement is typically shorter and more focused, placing strong emphasis on academic interest, relevant experience, and career goals related to the chosen field of study.

Meanwhile, European universities may set their own distinct expectations. They often require applicants to demonstrate academic ability, personal motivation and course suitability. A more structured approach may be needed, with a clear explanation of why the student is applying to that specific university or programme.
