The Milestone symbol

Why Laika?

The courage to be curious. The responsibility to explore.

On 3 November 1957, Laika, travelling aboard Sputnik 2, became the first living creature to orbit the Earth. Her story is both about crossing a boundary that had never been crossed before and about the responsibility that comes with every new possibility.

For us, Laika is more than a historical reference.New horizons. Thoughtful choices. Responsible exploration.
Towards the unknown

Your own path often begins with a good question.

For Milestone, Laika symbolises the curiosity that turns towards the unknown. She represents the moment when someone steps beyond the familiar and begins to take their own questions seriously.

Our students arrive with different interests, backgrounds and plans. Some already have a clear sense of direction; others are still searching. What they share is curiosity and a willingness to invest time, attention and effort in discovering what genuinely interests them.

Your own path does not arrive ready-made. You have to discover it.

Milestone provides the space, knowledge, mentoring and community to do that.

Three meanings

What does Laika capture in a single image?

01

Curiosity

Learning begins when someone realises there is still something they do not understand well enough. At Milestone, a good question has value in its own right. It encourages you to explore new fields, examine ready-made answers and develop ideas of your own.

02

Courage

03

Responsibility

Knowledge opens up possibilities, and possibility brings responsibility. At Milestone, achievement alone is not enough: what also matters is how you use your abilities, the decisions you make and the value you create for others.

The whole story

Responsibility is what gives exploration its full meaning.

The difficult part of Laika’s story is also part of what the symbol means. The mission was not designed for her return, and she had no choice in the role she was given. For us, Laika is therefore not a romantic symbol of recklessness.

She reminds us that those who open new paths for others carry a particular responsibility. Curiosity must be accompanied by preparation, attention and care.

Shaping your own path

Question. Explore. Decide. Shape.

A Milestone student navigates unfamiliar territory with the support of mentors, faculty and peers, while the right to decide remains their own throughout. Along the way, they gain a clearer sense of what interests them, where their strengths lie, which questions they want to keep returning to and where they want to go next.

University admission is an important milestone on that journey. The wider aim is to develop the independence and way of thinking that will remain useful long after university begins.

01 / Question

Curiosity

Takes their own questions seriously and learns to formulate them more precisely.

02 / Explore

Experience

Encounters new subjects, methods, people and communities.

03 / Decide

Direction

Connects their interests, abilities and opportunities.

04 / Shape

Responsibility

Actively builds their own path and makes their knowledge valuable to others as well.

Why does Laika stay with us?

Every generation has horizons that are still waiting to be discovered.

The next great questions in science, technology, economics, the arts and society are already waiting for today’s young people. They will need to look for new answers while keeping human considerations in view.

Laika reminds us of three things: stay curious, have the courage to set out, and take responsibility for what you create along the way.
